Climate targets Löfbergs climate goal for 2020 is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in relation to production volume of coffee by 40 percent (compared to 2005). The emissions included in the climate objective is scope 1 and 2 and business travel in scope 3.
How will the targets be achieved? Löfbergs has for many years worked systematically with energy efficiency measures. Energy consumption/produced volume of coffee has been halved in 20 years. However, the most significant energy efficiency measures were implemented before 2005, which makes the challenge even greater. To be able to reach the goal one important step for Löfbergs is to start using renewable fuel when roasting coffee.
Between 80 and 90 percent of the coffee's climate impact is, however, in the cultivation stage. And hence, where climate action has the greatest effect. Therefore, Löfberg prioritize and work to have long and close relationships with coffee farmers around the world in order to be able to contribute to more sustainable farming practices. This is for example done through its own development projects linked to global climate challenges (Coffee & Climate). In order to increase both the demand and supply of more sustainable coffee, Löfberg work actively to increase the share of certified coffee (organic, Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and Utz) that have lower environmental impact. The goal is to reach 100 percent certified products in 2020.
