94. Kavli – recycled aluminum in the tube

100% recycled aluminum in all Kavli cheese spread and mayonnaise tubes

After a gradual phase-out since 2022, all tubes of Kavli Cheese Spread and Mayonnaise are now made from 100 percent recycled aluminum. The material in the recycled tubes comes 95 percent from household recycling, with the remaining 5 per cent from industrial waste. The new tube is a lightweight tube, which means it contains less material but retains the same good properties and the material is more squeezable, maximizing the use of its contents.

This is an important initiative to reach the company’s goal of 70 percent recycled packaging material. Extracting new aluminum is very energy-intensive and burdensome for the environment as it involves mining bauxite. By reusing aluminum that is already in circulation, 95 percent of the energy consumption in manufacturing is saved, resulting in an 80 percent CO2e saving. This strategic shift is thus an important step forward towards the company’s overall climate goal in Scope 3.
