According to the State of the Nordic Region 2018 report, the Nordic Region is the most innovative in Europe, especially with regards to clean technologies. All Nordic countries mention the importance of sustainability and the green element of export in their export strategies. It is a clear priority and in many sectors Nordic businesses are at the forefront when it comes to green products and clean tech. Denmark is strong when it comes to wind and water technology, Finland in low-carbon technologies solutions in e.g. the metals industry and electrotechnical industry, Norway in green maritime technology, Iceland in renewable energy solutions and Sweden in green steel manufacturing and fossil-free iron sponge.

As part of Climate Neutral Nordics, three Nordic climate business networks (CLC, Skift – Business Leaders and the Haga Initiative), have looked at the climate benefits of Nordic green export. We’ve gathered lessons from discussions with export promotion actors in the Nordics, and three of them relate to how we can increase cooperation in region for more green export:

Joint marketing and pooling resources and platforms,

Financing clusters of Nordic export, and

Methodologies for measuring climate impact of Nordic export.

These are not exhaustive examples of how the Nordic countries can collaborate around green export, but the recurring ones that we came across.

However, as important as the development and proliferation of green technologies are, and the business opportunities that come with that for Nordic businesses, at a societal level the shadow side of export – that is import – is important to talk about. Export benefits are generally speaking avoided emissions from production that in practice takes place elsewhere. In the Nordics, we import emissions, so called consumption-based emissions. Of course, they can also occur from consumption (private and public) of goods and services produced in the country. But working with export climate benefits also evoked the question of consumption-based emissions and specifically what role can Nordic businesses have in reducing them in the region?

Despite their significant strides in reducing territorial emissions, the challenge of consumption-based emissions remains in the Nordic countries. Addressing consumption-based emissions is crucial for the Nordics to achieve their climate objectives and requires innovative solutions, particularly in public procurement and household consumption. In addition, it will also be an additional step in showcasing climate leadership on the global scene. Part of this leadership is something that Nordic businesses can take on.

The recently released report “The role of businesses to help reduce consumption-based emissions in the Nordics” , argues that Nordic businesses are in a position to be key actor in the efforts to reduce consumption-based emissions – both through offering low-emission alternatives and guiding consumers as well as changing their own “consumption behaviour” upstream in their value chains. Furthermore, something which is highlighted in another one of the project’s reports “Circular business models – Nordic opportunities and challenges in the new geopolitical landscape”, is that there is great potential to increase value chain cooperation with circular business solutions within the Nordic region, especially within food, metals and rare earth minerals and renewable energy. This hols the potential to reduce consumption-based emissions where the Nordic countries also increase independence on import, and where there is a higher degree of circularity. This in turn also reduces geopolitical risks and increases resilience within the Nordic region, especially in the three mentioned sectors which are all of strategic importance in the green sustainable transition.

So while the Nordic countries should continue to develop, promote and export green technologies than can deliver climate benefits, simultaneously it is important that the region also deals with challenges linked to reducing consumption-based emissions. And in this, Nordic companies can also play a role.

Despite their significant strides in reducing territorial emissions, the challenge of consumption-based emissions remains in the Nordic countries.
