The treatment plant’s streams contain plant nutrients, such as nitrogen, which can be extracted and circulated to arable land. Nitrogen is also found in other water streams, such as leachate from landfills. Together with Ragn-Sell’s subsidiary EasyMining, Lantmännen is building a pilot plant to extract nitrogen from the reject water, the water that arises when draining the sludge in the treatment plants, and leachate from landfills.
A circular business model is created when the plant industry is sold in order to be used again in agriculture. The recycling prevents the nitrogen from being discharged into watercourses or can otherwise have a negative effect on the environment. The industry ends up where it does good and creates plant power in the right place.
