A new collaboration initiative has been initiated between LKAB and Boliden, aimed to create a circular flow of necessary substances and minerals in the mining industry. When phosphorus and rare earth metals, among other things, are to be extracted from LKAB’s existing waste streams, significant amounts of sulfuric acid are required. Instead of being produced from fossil products from oil refineries, the waste stream from the Aitik mine has been identified as a possible raw material. The plan is for Boliden to establish a plant in Aitik for the production of pyrite concentrate, which reduces the need for landfills in Aitik. In parallel, LKAB establishes plants to produce sulfuric acid from the concentrate.
