By taking care of their own and others’ industrial sidestreams, new high-quality and environmentally efficient products are created for LKAB. More than a third of LKAB’s industrial mineral sales come from secondary raw material flows today, which in sales value is over 1 billion SEK. For example, LKAB take back granulated blast furnace slag from steel producers, to whom LKAB may have sold the iron ore, and grind it into a fine powder. The material is called GGBS (Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag) and is used as a cement substitute in concrete production, which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 70 percent for concrete.
